Chamber adding electronic sign
Residents and visitors will soon have another way to stay informed about community events.
The Midwest City Chamber of Commerce plans build an electronic welcome sign near the intersection of SE 29th Street and Air Depot Boulevard. The 20-foot-tall sign will include dual-sided digital displays to promote Chamber and community events.

“We wanted it to be piece of art work, not just typical electronic billboard,” said Bonnie Cheatwood, Midwest City Chamber of Commerce executive director. “The sign will only be used for
Chamber and community events and will not include any advertising.”
The city council approved the Chamber’s request for the sign and rezoned the property as a planned unit development (PUD).
The newly created Bicentennial Park Planned Unit Development includes the strip of land on the south side of SE 29th St. between Air Depot Blvd. and Town Center Dr. The site includes a welcome center, park, an Air Force jet fighter plane exhibit and water detention area.
City leaders also granted a variance for the use of decorative poles in lieu of pole covers on the sign. According to the city’s sign ordinance, sign poles must be covered with materials that are “attractive, aesthetically pleasing and architecturally consistent with the sign and/or main building. Billy Harless, Community Development Director, said the decorative sign poles match the design in Town Center Plaza.
The Chamber received an $80,000 grant from the Midwest City Memorial Hospital Authority in 2013 for the welcome sign. The organization will be responsible for messaging and maintenance for the sign.
Cheatwood said the project has been delayed due to road construction at the end intersection of SE 29th St. and Air Depot Blvd. She hopes to have the sign in place by the end of the year.
