Saturday Choctaw High School hosted the annual intrateam scrimmage putting this year’s blue and gold lineup against one another as a season preview for Yellowjacket fans.

As always, the Aug. 15 event was a community-wide celebration featuring vendors, food trucks, games, and more before fall sports teams of all ages took the field for a “Glimpse of GOLD.”

The evening ended with scrimmages of the 2020 CHS Yellowjackets.

Fans got a glimpse of what Choctaw believes to be the gold standard in Oklahoma football, but coaches say there’s still plenty of work to be done before the Jackets open the regular season.

“Anytime at scrimmage No. 1 there’s a lot of good stuff, a lot of bad stuff, and a lot of stuff in between. Saw a lot of promise for our team. This was our first time going live contact,” said head coach Jake Corbin. “What I love about Choctaw Yellowjacket football is guys are flying around and super aggressive. Guys were giving their best effort. As long as you have those things we can work on the rest. A lot to work on, but a lot of good things.”

While the intrasquad scrimmage showed some of this year’s potential, the Jackets are excited to test themselves against some other teams before they begin a challenging 2020 schedule.

“I always tell my guys this is kind of my least favorite day of the year. It’s a lot of fun, but every time someone makes a great play that means someone made a bad play. Anytime there’s a big hit, that means one of my guys got hit,” said Corbin. “The whole time you want to blow the whistle as soon as it’s snapped, because you hate seeing our guys getting hit. But at the same time, iron sharpens iron.”

Choctaw is set to scrimmage Mustang Friday, then the junior varsity is set to scrimmage Newcastle the following week. Coaches are in talks trying to setup a scrimmage with Norman as well.
