Del City nearly pulled out a victory in their first wrestling dual of the season last week.
The Eagles pulled within three points late in the dual, but Norman finished off the night with back-to-back wins for the 48-33 dual win on Nov. 30.
“We had some matches where we gave up some falls,” said coach Kevin Davis. “Our inexperience showed through a bit. The effort is never in question with our guys but comes down to mat time. We just need more experience and exposure.”
Del City’s Hunter Monroe earned a hard fought 9-5 decision over Darin Tatum at 195 pounds to make it a 36-33 score.
“He has a lot of heart. He works hard every day and scrapped it out to get the win,” Davis said.
Wyatt Drake came out strong in the next match but got caught late. Norman’s Aydin Spencer got a fall with 9 seconds left in the second period, which clinched the dual for the Tigers.
Jo’Quan Howard wrestled up a weight and still came away with a fall at 160 pounds. It was his first match of the season since coming back after football.
“He just went out and beat him with toughness and technique,” Davis said.
Del City’s girls wrestled several exhibition matches against Norman. Brooklyn Noel, Rayna Nash, Kylea Birdsong and Sorrell Hurd each won matches.
