Mid-Del wrestlers qualify for state tournament

Fifteen Mid-Del wrestlers will compete at the Class 5A state tournament this week at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.
Carl Albert had nine wrestlers qualify for state and Del City saw five punch their ticket last week at regionals.
The Titans hosted the Class 5A West Regional on Friday and Saturday. The host team finished fifth overall and saw seven boys qualify by placing in the top five.
Seniors Grant Gober and Alex Sutterfield were both regional champions. Gober won the 150-pound title for his fourth trip to state. Sutterfield became a three-time state qualifier after taking first at 215. Kasen Miller (138), Isaiah Matanane (162) and Raylan Sherman (175) each finished as runners-up. And Brayden Mixay (120) and Nathan Sutterfield (157) both placed third.
Heidi Schultz and Janelle Lynch both qualified for state during the OSSAA West Girls Regional Feb. 13-14 at Mustang High School. Lynch placed third at 125 and Schutlz took fourth at 145.
Del City had five wrestlers qualify for state Saturday at 5A West Regional. The Eagles’ qualifiers included Evan Colbert (106), Dimitri Kizer (126), Jo’Quan Howard (144), Deontre Buttram (165) and Ricklan Holmes (190). Kizer and Howard both finished third at regionals. Buttram and Holmes were fourth and Colbert came in fifth.
Earlier in the week, Sorrell Hurd advanced to the girls state tournament by placing third at regionals.
Midwest City competed in the 6A West Regional at Piedmont High School but did not have any state qualifiers. Darian Dennis was the team’s top placer as he took sixth at 175 pounds.
The state tournament begins with the wrestle-in matches at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The semifinals are set for 7:45 p.m. Friday and the finals begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
