Midwest City’s girls were the favorite in last week’s regional tournament.

And they certainly played the part.

The Lady Bombers cruised to a Class 6A West Regional title last week at JE Sutton Fieldhouse. They clinched the title with a 61-35 victory over the Millerettes on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Midwest City advances to the Area finals against Edmond North. The game is set for 6 p.m. Thurdsay at Chickasha High School. The winner moves on to state, and the loser will face Moore or Norman North in an Area consolation finals game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Chickasha.

Midwest City doubled up Yukon in the first two quarters. They led 20-10 in the first and 32-16 at the break. Myracle Washington tallied 10 points in the first half and Mya Brown and Saliyah Landon each had eight.

The lead continued to grow in the second half. Midwest City hit six free throws in the fourth quarter for the 61-35 win.

Washington led the team with 19 points and Landon scored 14 in the win.

Midwest City opened the regional tournament Thursday with an 83-26 win against U.S. Grant.

“It was nice to see everyone playing with high energy,” said coach Megan Maloy-Knight. “We had 17 assists which showed we’re sharing the basketball.”

Washington was again the high scorer with 12 points. She showed her ability to shoot from the perimeter and attack the basketball.

“This is the Myracle that we had the last couple of years and she had kind of been hiding this year, so it’s really nice to see her playing with confidence again. She’s not just staying at the 3-point line but attacking more.”

Washington credited her teammates with helping her reclaim her confidence.

“My teammates feed me the ball and always try to keep me encouraged and help me find my confidence,” she said. “They always build me up and that helps a lot.”

Midwest City’s boys didn’t fare as well in the regional round as they lost to No. 1-ranked Edmond North 61-42 on Friday night.
