YUKON – Midwest City Lady Bomber sensational junior De’Yanna Douglas completed her sweep of the competition in the shot put during the 2023 season with an OSSAA Class 6A State Record heave of 46-9 for the gold medal at the State Championships at Yukon High School Saturday.
Douglas picked up a few medals as a freshman last year but was dedicated to setting a State record during her sophomore year.
As expected, her stiffest competition came from Westmoore senior Accalyra King who had the second best throw during the season among all classes with a 41-05.5 to her credit.
Douglass led that parade as well with a season best 43-2.
At the State meet, each contestant is allowed 3 throws and Douglass got her State Record throw on her second attempt.
King was a distant second at 41-5.5 and Douglass bettered that as well with a 41-9 on her fifth throw.
So why did she continue after setting the record?
“I felt good today. There was no wind, the ring was in top shape and I wanted to see how far I could throw. I knew King would be a challenge but I knew my best throws had come yet.”
Future goals?
“I know it sounds impossible but I want to get 50 feet and I have two more years to get it. I’ve already talked to a few colleges and I’m sure they would take notice of a 50-foot throw,” she added.
Steven Brazille finished third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.85 for the other MCHS medal.
