A Del City family is countering negativity with a unique message of love.
They set up a display in their front yard featuring a pair of 12-foot giant skeletons wearing Del City and Choctaw t-shirts. In front of them, is an inflatable hands and heart with the message “I love you.”
The display was outside their home near Vickie Dr. and SE 22nd St. in Del City.
The message of love comes days after a fatal shooting at a Del City – Choctaw football game. Samantha said they were sick of seeing disparaging comments about their community.
“We’ve seen a lot of negativity everywhere about how Del City is such a crappy place,” Samantha said. “Our son is a freshman at Del City High School. We have lived here for about a year, and we like it. We have a nice neighborhood.”
She said a teacher helped get t-shirts for the skeletons. The inflatable hands and heart were part of a Valetine’s Day display.
The skeleton display started last year as a Halloween decoration. They decided to keep it up, decorating it for different holidays and themes.
“I’m Australian and have always loved Halloween but we never celebrated it there,” Samantha said. “When I came here and saw all the Halloween decorations at stores, I almost lost my mind.”
She said they will soon begin decorating the giant skeletons for Halloween.
