Midwest City’s softball team didn’t get a win Saturday against Mustang.

But they proved they can hang with one of the top teams in the state.

“Our team played extremely hard against the No. 2 team in the state in Mustang,” said coach Mark Judson. “We have improved as the season has progressed. While we had a couple of errors my girls recovered well from them.”

Sophomore Noreli Brown was excellent in the circle. She finished with 13 strikeouts and allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks.

Freshman Livia Davis was 1 for 2 with a walk and Kenee Thompson hit an RBI single.

Mustang scored a couple of runs early and hung on for a 5-1 win in a District 6A-4 matchup.

The Lady Broncos pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the first inning. Arionna McElroy hit an RBI single and later scored from third base to make it a 2-0 game.

Alexis Kierstead drove in another run with an RBI triple in the third inning, making it a 3-0 score.

A couple of miscues led to two more runs for Mustang in the fifth. Natalia Delgado scored on a wild pitch and Kierstead scored on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead.

Midwest City answered with a run in the sixth. Addy Scott and Davis drew back-to-back walks with two outs.

Thompson singled in a run making it a 5-1 final.

Kierstead and Rylee Hannon each had a pair of hits.

Aubree Hall earned the win in 5 2/3 innings for Mustang. She allowed only two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Amelia Mason pitched the final 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Midwest City also lost district games against Bixby (10-4) and Jenks (10-0) last week. On Friday, they beat Putnam City West 15-0. Keke Walker homered, and Payne drove in three runs.

Brown recorded 12 strikeouts in the win.

Midwest City faced Mustang again on Monday. The team will celebrate senior night on Friday against Del City.
