Del City to face Coweta Friday for District 5A-3 supremacy

Del City believes it has what it takes to win a district title.

And it showed last week as they trounced Glenpool 67-0 for their third straight shutout of the season.

The Eagles (8-0, 5-0) racked up 638 yards of total offense with a nearly even split of run to pass. They held the Warriors (3-5, 1-4) to 88 yards and six first downs.

“Our kids played great and they’re starting to hit on all cylinders,” said coach Robert Jones. “I feel like we’re really balanced offensively and playing really well defensively to get our third straight shutout and fifth of the season.”

Senior running back Rodney Fields accounted for many of those yards and several big plays. He ran for 150 yards on four carries including a 63-yard touchdown. Rodney Fields also had two touchdown catches for 66 and 46 yards.

Jeremiah Miles also topped the century mark in rushing with 10 carries for 102 yards and three scores. River Warren and Ricklan Holmes also each had a rushing touchdown.

Warren threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns on 10 of 13 passing.

Kedarrius Palmer and Ladanian Fields each caught a touchdown pass. Ladanian had three receptions for 58 yards. Shayden Green finished with three receptions for 51 yards.

The Eagles scored on their first play of the game with a 66-yard screen pass to Rodney Fields for a 7-0 lead.

They added three more touchdowns in the second. Warren hit Ladanian Fields on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Holmes added a 29-yard touchdown run for a 21-0 lead. Warren then rounded out the scoring with a 73-yard touchdown strike to Palmer.

Del City led 27-0 at halftime.

The Eagles doubled their lead in the third quarter. Warren threw his fourth touchdown of the night to Rodney Fields and scored another himself. Miles ran for three scores and Holmes had another.

Del City will have a chance to take control of District 5A-3 on Friday night when they travel to Coweta (6-2, 5-0). The defending district champions have won six straight after dropping their first two games against Carl Albert and Wagoner.

“Coweta is the defending district champion and they’re a great program and win a lot of games,” said Jones. “I expect this to be the most physical and challenging game of the year.”

The two teams were in a similar situation last year. Coweta beat Del City 18-17 in overtime to win the district title.

“We’ve been looking forward to this game all year,” Jones said. “We felt like we let it slip out of our hands last year and we’re not going to do it again.”
