Beacon hosting candidate forum Jan. 29

The Midwest City Beacon will be hosting a candidate forum next week for the upcoming Midwest City City Council elections.

The event will take place at the Midwest City Public Library, 8413 E. Reno Ave., at 5 p.m. on Jan. 29.

Candidates for Midwest City Ward 3, 4 and 6 have been invited to attend.

The forum will be moderated by Professor James Davenport and Dr. Emily Stacey with Rose State College.

The evening will begin with a meet the candidate portion from 5 – 5:30 p.m. The forum will run from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Candidates will be asked general questions about issues facing Midwest City as well as those directly impacting their ward.

Candidates that have filed for the upcoming election include, Ward 3: AJ Bailey, Espaniola Bowen, Rita Maxwell, Raymond Melton, Jeff Moore and Janice Swartz; Ward 4: Marc Thompson, Nicholas Timme and Charles Wallace; and Ward 6: Rick Favors and William Bridges.

Ward 2 Councilmember Pat Byrne ran unopposed and will serve a third term.

The primary election is set for Feb. 13 with a general election, if needed, on April 2. A candidate can win the seat outright in the primary with more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate hits the threshold, the top two vote getters will advance to the general election.

The winners in Ward 4 and 6 will serve a four-year term. The election for Ward 3 will be for the remainder of an unexpired term.

The Midwest City Chamber of Commerce is hosting a candidate forum on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. at Rose State College Learning Resources Center, 6420 SE 15th St. The event will be divided into three sections with Ward 3 from 5:15 – 6 p.m., Ward 5 from 6:15 – 6:45 p.m. and Ward 6 from 7 – 7:30 p.m.
