Midwest City police confiscated a firearm from a student at a Midwest City High School basketball game on Friday, school officials said.

Police Capt. Frank Valley said two juveniles entered the fieldhouse through a backdoor while carrying a backpack with a gun inside. An officer stopped the students after seeing the backpack which is not permitted at games and later found the gun.

One of the students ran and was later found by the police.

A third juvenile opened the door for the students but was not involved in the incident, Valley said.

The incident happened about 7:40 p.m. between the varsity girls and boys games against Santa Fe South. It did not interrupt play of either games.

Two students were detained by police and later released to their parents pending further investigation.

“We will talk to the DA but they’re very picky about what we can bring juveniles in for so sometimes we need to staff it with a DA,” Valley said.

Valley said the investigation is ongoing.

“That’s part of the reason we didn’t do anything tonight,” he said. “We still have some follow up investigation to do.”

Police did not release information about the type of gun confiscated or motives of the students.

Mid-Del Schools implemented safety protocols for large events including basketball and football games. They installed metal detectors at the gates and require all visitors to be scanned. Bags are also prohibited at events. Police officers also provide security at the games.

Three police officers were on duty at the game. Several other officers were called to the scene after the backpack was found.

“I have a great group of guys that work here and they’re really good at that kind of stuff,” Valley said.

It was the second gun-related incident at a Mid-Del basketball game in the past year. A student from Millwood High School fired a gun after a basketball game at Del City High School on Jan. 17, 2023. A Midwest City student was also shot and killed during a shooting a Del City-Choctaw football game at Choctaw High School in August.

Mid-Del Schools released a statement about the incident:

“Tonight, Midwest City Police confiscated a gun from a student at the Midwest City High School basketball game. The weapon was caught due to the safety protocols that the district has implemented. We have turned over security footage from the game to the police department, and we appreciate their prompt cooperation. We will assist them in their investigation any way we can.”
