Jakary Brown gave the Carl Albert girls a much-needed offensive spark in the second half against Del City on Friday afternoon.

And when they needed one more basket, the sophomore came through.

Brown hit a floater in the lane with two seconds left to give Carl Albert a 39-37 win in the regional final.

“That felt great to hit the shot,” Brown said. “I wasn’t expecting to get the ball. The play was set up for Essence Curry, but she trusted me to do what I do best, and I went and executed.”

Brown scored all 14 of her points in the second half.

Del City led 20-12 at halftime as the Lady Titans struggled to hit shots against the zone defense.

It was a different story in the second half. Carl Albert opened the third quarter on a 10-4 run to pull within two at 24-22. Brown hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter. Reina Lewis was fouled on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer but hit only one of three foul shots, making it a 30-26 Del City lead.

Brown hit another 3-pointer in the fourth to give Carl Albert the lead at 33-30. Del City tied the score three times in the fourth, finally at 37-37 on a basket by Jenericka Thompson with two minutes left in the game.

Both teams struggled to take the lead in the final minutes.

The Lady Titans finally went up for good on Brown’s game-winner.

“We said we’ll play 32 minutes and it’s going to come down to the last second,” said Carl Albert coach Kyle Richey. “We got the stop we needed, we got the rebound we needed and they executed the set. That’s why we practice it.”

Sacah Hunt led the Lady Eagles with 12 points and Lewis had 10. Shelby Thornton was held to two points and struggled with foul trouble.

Del City had a tough time at the foul line where they made 11 of 20 free throws.

Carl Albert will face another Mid-Del opponent in the area championship. They face Midwest City at 6 p.m. Thursday at Piedmont High School. The winner advances to the state tournament. The loser will play Altus/Guymon at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the area consolation finals.
