PIEDMONT – The Midwest City girls basketball team put in some blood, sweat, and tears of joy last Thursday night.

And it paid off.

The Lady Bombers punched their ticket to the Class 5A state tournament with a 50-40 win over rival Carl Albert in the area championship game.

Senior De’Yanna Douglas had to switch jerseys twice in the game due to a constant nosebleed. She started the game in her No. 45 jersey before switching with teammates for number 25 and finally 4.

She still finished with 13 points in the win.

“I was bleeding from my nose, my ankle and my knuckle,” she said. “You just have to laugh it off, and then come back better than ever.”

Sierra Martin led the team with 14 points including two 3-pointers. Markia Pratt scored 10 points and Saliyah Landon added nine points.

Midwest City reached state for the third time in the last four years, but this is the first time they’ve made it as area champions. They missed state last year after losing to Norman North in the area consolation final.

“We wanted to relax this week and didn’t want another upset this year,” said coach Megan Knight.

It was the first meeting between the two Mid-Del schools this season.

The teams played even through much of the first half. Midwest City took an early lead and went up 15-13 at the end of the first. Carl Albert answered in the second. Jakary Brown hit a floater in the lane and Ausha Moore added a long 3-pointer to tie the game 20-20 at halftime.

Midwest City maintained a slim lead through much of the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth. Landon, who played at Carl Albert her freshman and sophomore year, hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead to double digits with just over five minutes to play.

“That first half I was missing all of my shots, but I came back out after halftime and shot out there,” she said. “When I got in the game I was confident and made two big time shots for us. It made me excited to help us get to state.”

Douglas hit 5 of 6 free throws to seal the win.

“She knew what she had to do, and she knew our best chance to win was with her on that court, so she kept playing,” Knight said. “Her eyes were watering. Her nose was swollen but she’s tough as nails.”

Carl Albert went on to beat Altus in the consolation finals Saturday afternoon to advance to the state tournament.

Midwest City will face Tulsa Booker T. Washington in the first round of the 5A state tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Lloyd Noble Center. The winner advances to face Sapulpa/Carl Albert in the state semifinals on Friday.
