NORMAN – The Carl Albert boys hadn’t faced rival Midwest City yet this season.

But coach Jay Price knew what to expect.

“When you get to the final four it’s such a fine line between winning and losing,” Price said.

The Titans found themselves on the wrong side of that line as they lost 56-54 in the Class 5A state semifinals Friday afternoon at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Carl Albert trailed much of the game but stayed on the Bombers’ heels in the fourth quarter. After trailing by six points with 1:36 remaining, the Titans rallied to pull within a point.

Marcus James scored on a putback and Steven Anderson scored off a steal. Anderson was later fouled on a 3-pointer attempt and hit all three free throws to make it a 55-54 score with about five seconds left.

Deshawn Denson was fouled with 3.8 seconds left. He made the first free throw but missed the second. The Titans grabbed the rebound and hurried down court. Anderson launched a shot from beyond half court that bounced off the rim.

“I would have liked for him to get a little deeper and get a closer shot, but he almost made it, and you can’t fault him for that,” Price said about the last second shot.

Price said he considered taking a timeout following the missed free throw but didn’t believe it would have improved their chances.

“I was going over that in my head but if we called timeout we’d have to take it out on the baseline and lose about ½ of a second,” he said. “I don’t think that would have been an advantage.”

Midwest City advanced to the finals. They went on to beat Booker T. Washington for the 5A state title.

The Bombers took the lead early. Carl Albert scored the final five points of the period, cutting the deficit to 15-12. The score stayed close in the second. Hutch Russell made a 3-pointer at the buzzer making it a 27-23 score at the break.

Carl Albert closed the gap in the third as they worked the ball inside more. They opened the half on a 9-2 run. James, Lebron Royal and Ryan Reynolds each scored to give the Titans a 32-29 lead with 4:20 in the third.

Midwest City quickly kicked it back to a six-point game. Denson hit a 3-pointer and Young scored on a fastbreak dunk. Quincy Hopkins scored at the buzzer, narrowing Midwest City’s lead to 41-40 heading to the fourth.

The Titans kept it close in the fourth but couldn’t overtake the Bombers in the 56-54 loss.

James led the team with 12 points and eight rebounds. Jayden Hopkins had 11 points and four steals and Anderson added 10 points.

Carl’Sheon Young scored 16 for the Bombers.

Carl Albert advanced to the state semifinals by beating Holland Hall, 57-51, on Thursday afternoon. It was the second year in a row that the Titans have beat the Dutch in the first round.

Jayden Hopkins scored 23 points and Quincy Hopkins had 16 points along with eight rebounds.

The Titans led 28-24 at halftime.

Holland Hall bounced back in the third quarter and took the lead 34-32 on free throws from Julius Wilson at the 3:15 mark. The Dutch stayed in front and led 38-35 heading to the fourth.

Carl Albert didn’t reclaim the lead until midway through the fourth. Jayden Hopkins broke a tie with a basket and a foul that he made for a 49-46 lead.

The Hopkins brothers and Anderson hit free throws in the final minutes for the win.
