Tigers up 1-0 on Chickasha for District Championship
By Jayson Knight
Tuttle Baseball won an important game Monday over Chickasha 4-1.
Both teams were undefeated in district play, and meeting up to determine some important playoff implications.
Chickasha scored first in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers kept them scoreless after that. The Tigers put their first run on the scoreboard when Tuttle’s Anderson Forrest scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning.
Tuttle junior Brady McAdoo’s base hit gave the Tigers a lead thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Forrest and an RBI from Kolby Heskett.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Tuttle senior Braylon Brooks hit an RBI triple, followed by an RBI single from Hunter Watson.
Tuttle won at home and played Tuesday at Chickasha after this publication’s deadline.
As long as Tuttle beat Chickasha Tuesday, or lost by less than three runs, the Tigers will be the district champions.
Both the first and second place team in each district host a Regional Tournament, so after one more week of regular season play, Tuttle will be playing for their spot in the state tournament and a chance to repeat as State Champions.
Tuttle came into the week after going 2-1 at Owasso’s Pro-Nine Festival, sponsored by Nike. The Tigers won a dog fight against a tough Life Prep team out of Kansas 5-4, destroyed a team from Kickapoo, Missourri 11-0, but fell 9-1 to Owasso, a 6A perennial powerhouse.
“It was a good weekend in Owasso,” Tuttle Head Coach Breck Draper said Monday morning. “We got to play some pretty good ball clubs and kind of do some team bonding on the road, which is pretty big for our group as we get down here in the home stretch. Thursday and Friday, we threw a couple of our good arms so they could get tuned up for today and tomorrow; and then Saturday, we kind of took a punch from Owasso. We didn’t play our best baseball, but, as a coaching staff, we really weren’t concerned with that at all.
“We’re going to have a dog fight the next two days. They have some good pitching and good defense, and we have some good pitching and good defense. It’ll be about just really making sure to minimize mistakes and compete in the box. You’ve got to try to find a way to scratch a few runs and play good defense behind it.”
