Throughout Sharon Marion’s teaching career, a vast array of experiences with various grade levels have helped her adapt her approach and make a unique impact on Lakehoma Elementary students, and all that work has been recognized through her latest accomplishment: MPS 2023-24 District Teacher of the Year.
Marion, who has worked with second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade and special education students in her career, assumed the role of a fourth-grade teacher at Lakehoma in August of 2021.
From there, it didn’t take long for some of her goals for her students to take shape.
“As an educator, my primary goal is to spark genuine enthusiasm for learning and foster growth in my students,” Marion said. “I am dedicated to sharing knowledge and nurturing their critical thinking abilities. My aim is for students to develop a profound love for learning. I strive to create a supportive classroom atmosphere where every student feels empowered to reach their highest potential. I assist them in overcoming challenges with resilience and determination. I firmly believe that each child should have access to outstanding education customized to their individual requirements. I advocate passionately for a well-rounded learning environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong commitment to learning.”
According to Marion, the teaching profession was quickly identified as her calling. At first, she was inspired by the teachers and educators who influenced her, helping her identify a desire to emulate them in her early stages of interest. She recalled gathering friends on park benches
informally, primarily through childhood recess periods, and serving as the role of a teacher being the launching point of her passion to teach.
That passion was only reinforced when she was invited to assist both an elementary school and a special education classroom during high school, and that led to one of her most cherished moments in the profession when she received her first job offer to begin her teaching career.
Fast forward to this year, when the district officially announced the selection for Marion to represent the district as the Teacher of the Year, her first reaction was one of surprise. Soon afterward though, that surprise turned into a sense of honor and excitement for what is to come as she moves on to the state level for teacher of the year recognition.
“This recognition holds deep significance and humility for me,” Marion said. “I see this honor not just as mine but as a reflection of the amazing educators I collaborate with daily. I’m thankful for this recognition, (while) acknowledging that every teacher in Mustang Public Schools is equally deserving. I’m dedicated to representing them with integrity and excellence.”
Typically, teachers are given six-to-eight weeks to work on an application and to submit it.
Those applications are passed onto the district’s selection committee who vote on the winner of the district teacher of the year.
So, with plenty of experience in the profession, what stands out to Marion about Lakehoma and Mustang Public Schools?
“What truly sets Lakehoma apart is its nurturing and supportive environment, which extends from the dedicated administration to my inspiring fourth-grade teammates, and colleagues,” Marion said. “At Lakehoma, there’s a genuine sense of camaraderie and mutual respect, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere where continuous learning flourishes. Collaboration is not just encouraged; it’s part of our culture at Lakehoma, as we readily lend a hand and support one another whenever needed. I count myself incredibly fortunate to be part of a school where positivity and assistance are not just values but daily practices.”
Marion was also complimentary of the teachers serving Mustang and surrounding communities for their dedication.
“I hold a strong conviction that within every classroom, there exists the potential for a Teacher of the Year,” Marion said. “Throughout my journey, I’ve observed educators demonstrate unparalleled dedication and unwavering commitment. Witnessing this level of passion and
selflessness in shaping the future generation is truly inspiring. Teachers exhibit remarkable resilience, readily embracing challenges with a spirit of generosity. I take great pride in being a part of this great profession.”
“Also, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my incredible husband and my cherished family, who have been unwavering pillars of support throughout my journey as an educator. Their active involvement in school events and selfless sacrifices of personal time have been invaluable contributions to my career.”
