Union City hosting Senior Lunch Dec 4

Union City seniors take a picture with Santa during last year’s Union City Senior Citizens Lunch.

The Town of Union City is hosting a Senior Lunch at Union City Fire Department, located at 675 North Main Street in Union City.

The event is being held at 11:45 a.m. this coming Wednesday, December 4, and there will be food, fellowship, and pictures with Santa Claus.

“We’re going to be inviting out the senior citizens and there will be pictures with Santa for them, as well as gingerbread decorating, if they would like to do that as well. The Canadian County Health Department will also be there giving out free flu shots, and that’s for any age, not just for senior citizens. We just figured it was easier to have one thing for all of the community. That way they can get it while they’re already there, if they choose to get the shot, but anyone in the community at all that wants to get the shot can come.”

The senior lunch is just one of the upcoming events the Town of Union City is putting on.

Kids Santa Pics will be available at the Fire Department Saturday, December 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the same day as Shop With A Cop.

Preceding all of those events will be the Second Annual Christmas Parade 6 p.m. Saturday, November 30.

Union City Fire Chief David Jones was the coordinator for last year’s event.

He said last Tuesday, “I mean the turnout was huge. It was tons of people. As soon as it was over last year, we had people asking us if we were going to do it again next year, so we decided to hopefully make it a permanent event.”

Last year’s parade featured more than 40 entries. Chief Jones is hoping for even more this year.

“There were so many different things in it with a ton of people, so I’m hoping for as good or better of a turnout,” the chief said. “There’s several that have reached out and make sure that we knew they were going to be there.”

Union City would prefer folks call city hall to let them know how many floats/horses/trucks to expect, but they will not turn anyone away.

“They can just show up if they need to,” Chief Jones said, “but if they want to let us know they’re coming, they can call City Hall and just get on the list. We’re not going to turn anyone down regardless, but it’d be kind of nice to have an idea kind of what to expect. This year, when we end up at City Hall and do the lighting of the tree and everything, we’re also going to have some food trucks and some coffee trailers, hot chocolate, things like that. We hope to maybe build on it a little more every year.”
