Wrestlers compete at Midwest City Open

Local high school wrestlers wrapped up the preseason with the Midwest City High School Open on Nov. 18 at JE Sutton Fieldhouse.

Carl Albert had eight medalists including four champions. Midwest City racked up seven medals and Choctaw had 11 medalists with two individual champions.

Cash Wiley (120), Kasen Miller (138), Braden Anderson (157), Elijah Johnson (165) and Layton Leavitt (175). Paxton Pogue was runner-up, Brayden Mixay placed third and Conner Bates was fourth.

Wiley beat Putnam City West’s Jordan Callan by a 6-0 decision in the 120 finals.

Miller claimed the 138-pound title with a 16-4 major decision against Putnam City’s Monty Hall. The senior finished with two falls, a major decision and technical fall on the day.
In the 157 finals, Anderson won by decision against Gage Guthrie of Choctaw.

Johnson went 4-0 at 165 pounds including a fall against Midwest City’s Aidan Brown in the finals.

Leavitt wrapped up the Titans’ gold medal run by beating Shawnee’s Jayson Hair 5-2 in the 175 finals.

The Bombers were led by Aidan Brown (165) and Hakeem Olawuyi (215) who each placed second. Juan Pena (215) finished third and Gabe Young (150) and Aiden Tollison (215) were both fourth. In the girls’ division, Megan Aaron and Kiley Everette were third.

Brown racked up two major decisions in the tournament but dropped his final match to Elijah Johnson in the finals. Olawuyi lost to Markus Stewart of Putnam City North in the championship match.

For Choctaw, Wesley Davis (126) and Connor Edwards (132) both won gold. Cole Stevens (132), Gage Guthrie (157), Asher Walls (190) and Kaden Stitt (285) were each runner-up. Ethan Thomas (120) and Gavin Leyba (138) each claimed third and Ayden Thelin (175) came in fourth.

In the girls division, Choctaw’s Caiara Reaves placed third and Madisyn Newberry was fifth.

Midwest City opened the regular season Tuesday against El Reno. The Bombers and Titans will compete in the Putnam City Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Choctaw hosts Edmond Memorial on Thursday.
