A mustang club is raising donations for the victims of the recent severe weather across the state.
The Mustang Lions Club, in conjunction with other Lions Clubs across Oklahoma, were set up near Bronco Bowl on a May Saturday morning to collect gloves, diapers, trash bags and everyday items that are scarce in the areas impacted by tornados in recent weeks.
Mustang Lions Club members were prepared for situations like the severe weather, with the main investment being in a multi-functional trailer that can serve as an emergency response.
Rob Estes spoke to what the club planned to do following the donation drive.
“As things come in, we’re hoping that we have enough volunteers we are going to sort things out by size, by sex,” Estes said. “… Everything is going to be labeled and put into a box. That way, when we go down to Sulphur and we’re told exactly where to go in Sulphur to deliver these things, everything will be boxed and labeled. That way no one has to go through a box or
open a box to figure out what the contents are.”
Estes emphasized the benefit to other people that the volunteers provided from their work helping sort and volunteer at the drive this past Saturday.
Financial donations are also accepted for the Lions Club project. Estes said those who make financial donations will directly have the money used to purchase what the club did not receive from the drive that will go to the victims.
Anyone who couldn’t make it to the drive Saturday can still help through donations to the Lions Club.
“This will be ongoing until we are told to stop,” Estes said. “… We will take anything and everything.”
Estes said he is working to confirm if furniture can be included in donations. People can contact Estes at 405-875-1582, or can look at the social media account for the Mustang Lions Club for updates in real time.
