Mustang jumped back on the hardwood to last week to tip off 2025. Both the boys and girls traveled to Southmoore for key district matchups with different results Jan. 7.

The Lady Broncos rolled to a convincing 86-16 victory over the Lady Sabercats. Southmoore was held to seven points in the first half and never threatened MHS.

Senior Valentin Florence led all scorers with 17 points as she outscored SMH by herself.

As a team, Mustang forced Southmoore into 28 turnovers. That allowed them to generate points in the transition game.

But when they weren’t running, Mustang was able to knock down nine shots from behind the 3-point. It was just too many weapons for the Cats to focus on.

In the nightcap, the Mustang boys found themselves trailing by 15 at halftime to Southmoore. While they continued to try and battle to get back into the contest, they were unable to overcome the hole they had dug early in the night and they fell 65-56.

Jaden Johnson had a team high 29 points to lead Mustang. Even though the junior guard scored more than half the team’s points, it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Sabercats.

The loss dropped Mustang to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in District 6A-1. Heading into this week they were tied with U.S. Grant in district standing. Since they were scheduled to play each other Tuesday, one of the them was going to get their first district victory of the season this week.

The Mustang girls improved their overall record to 8-3 and sit atop of the district standings at 4-1. However, their district record was tied with Edmond Memorial, who they have already beaten this season.

Sitting a game behind Mustang is Yukon at 3-2. The two rivals will face off for the first this season when they play each other Friday at YHS. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

The boys are scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. That will conclude the Broncos first run through the district schedule.

Rematches will begin Jan. 21 at Norman North.
