Home Goods plans to open a store in Midwest City.

The popular home furnishing store will be located in the former Dick’s Sporting Goods building, 7095 SE 29th St.

Home Goods recently signed a lease for the building and plan to open in November. The store sells a wide range of home products such as indoor and outdoor furniture, rugs, lamps and other furniture. It is owned by TJX companies, which also owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Sierra Trading Post.

The vacant 50,000-square-foot Dick’s building is currently being renovated and divided into two spaces. The project includes gutting the inside of the building, removing the front entrance, rebuilding the loading dock, replacing the roof.

Sooner Investment and Sooner Town Center II LLC, which owns the building, are leading the project. The developer has built several other Home Goods stores in the state including in Norman and near Yukon.

“They basically want a brand-new store,” said Bob Sterns with Sooner Investment. “The only thing will be left are the outside walls.”

Robert Coleman, Midwest City economic development director, said he believes Home Goods will be a great fit in Town Center Plaza.

“Home Goods is one of TJX Companies best stores and I think they will compliment Mathis Home Store and bring people to town,” he said.

Coleman said adding Home Goods will make the other vacant space more attractive. He said Langston’s Western Wear initially expressed interest in the space after they lost their lease near SE 15th St. and Midwest Blvd. late last year but have been “radio silent.”

“Langston’s showed a lot of interest and then went quiet on us,” Coleman said. “I think everyone was sad to see them leave, and we hope they’re not gone for good.”

Coleman said they currently have three prospects.

The Midwest City Memorial Hospital Authority is providing funding for the construction project at the former Dick’s store.

The Hospital Authority trustees, which include the Midwest City Council, agreed to provide Sooner Town Center II with a $5,800,000 construction loan during a Jan. 28 meeting.

The loan term will be three years with an interest rate of 4.5%. The Hospital Authority will make about $500,000 – $750,000 over the lifetime of the loan, according to city attorney Don Maisch. He said the loan funds will be dispersed through a draw down. STC II will submit requests as work is completed.

According to the agreement, STC II will make interest payments for the three-year term and then find long-term financing from an independent third-party lending institution, paying off the construction loan in full. If STC II cannot find long-term financing, the Hospital Authority will consider undertaking the long-term loan.

Dick’s Sporting Good closed its Midwest City store in January 2023.

An unnamed national retailer has committed to lease 24,000-square-feet of vacant space in the former Dick’s building, according to city officials. STC II plans to redevelop the building for the future tenant, which includes splitting the space and repairing the roof. The space would be leased in the future.
