Carl Albert continued its strong start to the 2024-25 season with a shutout of Lawton Eisenhower last Thursday evening at Cameron Stadium.
The Titans (2-0) did not struggle in the non-district contest. In fact, seven players scored during the 70-0 shutout victory. That forced a running clock situation in the final quarter and a half, which benefited the defense in the form of only conceding one first down legally from open play.
Lawton Ike (1-2) quickly fell behind through a touchdown catch from Todd James and never recovered from the deficit. James would later catch a 78-yard touchdown pass to start the second half of the lopsided game.
Carl Albert didn’t look one-dimensional either. Daniel Newton scored twice from the Titans’ power formation, while LT Simmons showed shiftiness on multiple carries and produced a touchdown for his effort. Devin Woodring, Christian Oku and Jacson Webster also produced touchdowns in the resounding victory.
Coach Mike Dunn was pleased with how his team spread the wealth with scoring contributions.
“It just kind of shows you right now we have got pretty exceptional skill, which anytime you can put up those kind of points and that kind of offensive output, you obviously have guys in front of them that are blocking and our offensive line is gelling,” Dunn said. “… I just think it shows that we’ve got a lot of guys that can go anytime they touch the ball. And we’ve got a lot of threats out there.”
The defensive efforts warrant their own discussion. Carl Albert looked quick to the ball, swarming the Lawton Ike offense at nearly every opportunity. The one conceded first down that wasn’t due to a penalty came with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.
That was quickly made up for with a fumble recovery for a touchdown from Beau Davis.
In fact, Davis had a big day for the Titans. The sophomore linebacker played well in the fourth quarter and was in the right spot on a second occasion for a fumble recovery in the end zone for his second defensive touchdown of the night.
“We played pretty good and just flew around,” Dunn said. “I think at halftime they had negative 15 yards, and I think they ended up having (positive) 12 yards in the second half… I don’t know that I’ve ever been a part of one of those kind of games, but I was really proud of our kids and their effort.”
Carl Albert’s offense also benefited from great field position thanks to the defensive efforts.
Two shutout performances to start the season has the Titans in the best possible position. Next up is road trip to Stillwater for what could be the game of the week. Stillwater defeated powerhouse Tulsa Union 36-35 in overtime to open the season.
