OKLAHOMA CITY – Midwest City took its lumps in the first few weeks of the football season.
But they’re undefeated in games that count.
The Bombers (2-3, 1-0) ran past Southeast 47-13 Friday night in the District 5A-1 opener at Speegle Stadium.
“The good thing is our kids took last week’s game (loss to Del City) personal and they should have, because I sure did,” said coach Darrell Hall. “We went to work and got ourselves prepared to be better. I tell them not to worry about the opponent but worry about what we do.”
Senior tailback Jahhim Mahmoud did most of the running. He carried the ball 33 times for 272 yards and four touchdowns. Much of that came running between the tackles.
“Today we only ran power and a little bit of zone, so I just pretty much ran up and if I get hit, I get hit,” he said. “I just try to push through.”
Lincoln King ran for two scores.
Sophomore quarterback Roman Manella was 8 of 12 passing for 124 yards.
The Bombers took control early against the Spartans (3-1, 0-1). Mahmoud scored on three of the team’s first four possessions. He found the end zone on runs of 30, 1 and 14 yards for a 20-0 lead.
On the next drive, Chance Davis made an acrobatic catch down the sidelines for a 40-yard gain down to the Spartan 5.
“I dropped a wide-open pass before and I knew that was all my fault, so I had to make up for it,” Davis said.
King later scored in a wildcat formation for a 27-0 lead with 2:20 in the second.
Aidan Brown followed with a leaping interception on the next play from scrimmage. That set up King’s second score of the game.
“I saw in film that they like to throw that out route a lot in doubles, and when I saw them do that, I knew it was a pass,” Brown said. “I saw the quarterback looking at him, so I just kept sinking, he threw it and I made a play on the ball.”
Midwest City led 34-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Mahmoud broke a 54-yard touchdown, making it a 41-0 score.
Southeast got on the board with a couple of touchdowns.
Qaylen Pennon, a former Bomber, scored on a 41-yard catch and run with 3:06 in the third. The Spartans scored again on a short run following a fumbled snap on a punt by the Bombers.
Jaylan Gardner-White scored late in the fourth quarter and Midwest City added the two-point conversion for a 47-13 final.
Midwest City held the Spartans to 120 yards. Kiewon Landrum led the team with eight tackles and Felix Fuentes and Gabe Young had six stops apiece.
The Bombers return home Friday night to take on Newcastle (2-3, 1-0). The Racers, who moved up to 5A this season, beat Duncan 60-7 in their district opener.
