The Tuttle Lady Tigers are headed to the Super Regionals this week after powering through a tough three-game regional series against Weatherford that tested both their discipline and resilience.
Though the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) still labels the recent bracket as a “district” tournament, Tuttle Head Coach Rebecca Cobb confirmed Monday that it was, in fact, the regional round under the state’s updated postseason structure. The new format now advances teams through regionals, then super regionals, before qualifying for the state tournament.
“We did not hit the ball very well the first day,” Cobb said. “We swung at quite a few bad pitches. But other than that, I mean, you know, my pitcher struck out 20 girls on the first day and we still got beat. We just didn’t play to our capability.”
The Lady Tigers fell to Weatherford in their regional opener despite a dominant performance from the mound, a loss that Cobb described as a wake-up call for her players.
“The second day we were ready to play and focused,” she said. “It was like a little wake-up call to them.”
That refocus paid off. Behind sharp defense, timely hitting, and steady leadership, Tuttle bounced back to defeat Weatherford twice on day two of the regional bracket, sealing a comeback championship that showed the depth of their potential.
“There’s not a lot you can say in that situation,” Cobb explained. “We told them, you know, we can want it as much as we want as coaches, but it’s them that’s got to put the action into it. They stepped up and played like we know how to play.”
Cobb acknowledged the frustration that comes with early-round struggles but praised her players’ maturity in turning things around.
“It’s extremely frustrating,” she said. “But they came back and did a good job, and that’s all that mattered, they responded to not playing so well.”
Now, Fort Gibson travels to Tuttle for Super Regionals beginning Thursday. The matchup marks another tough test against a traditionally strong program.
“At this point, you can’t be terrible and still playing,” Cobb said. “Fort Gibson is good at everything a little bit, and the girls know it’s going to take focus.”
Tuttle hopes to carry the same energy that fueled its regional rebound into this next stage.
“The girls are looking forward to playing and they’re excited,” Cobb said. “We’d love to have all the support we could get. The community means a lot to them, and that kind of backing makes a difference.”
The winner of the Tuttle–Fort Gibson Super Regional series will advance to the Class 4A State Softball Tournament next week.
Thursday’s Super Regional at Tuttle vs. Fort Gibson are 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
