Heritage Day set for Saturday

Rose State College will host its second annual Heritage Day event at the Atkinson Heritage Center located at 1001 North Midwest Boulevard in Midwest City on Saturday, September 10.  Family friendly activities have been planned to recreate the beginning of Midwest City and celebrate the rich history of our town.  The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and all ages are invited.

The early days of Midwest City were marked with families gathering at the home of Midwest City founder W.P. “Bill” and Rubye Atkinson to ride Shetland ponies at the pony barn. The area has been preserved as a historic home and community event center.

The western themed event is open to the public to enjoy activities such as pony rides, a petting zoo, musical entertainment, arts and crafts, food trucks, and a historic home tour of the Atkinson Heritage Center.  Tours of the home will be given at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 12:15 and 1:15 p.m.

“My grandmother and granddaddy loved the opportunity to open their home and meet the great people who lived in our community,” said Cindy Mikeman, grand-daughter to W.P. “Bill” and Rubye Atkinson and Rose State College Foundation Director. “Being able to carry on their tradition thrills my heart and provides a connection between our civic community and education community.”

Wristbands will be available to purchase at $10 for children who would like to participate in the pony rides, petting zoo, covered wagon rides and inflatables.  These may be purchased in advance at www.rose.edu/heritage-day or at the Rose State College information tent on the day of the event.

The Rose State College Foundation will also conclude their 1957 Chevrolet fundraising raffle by drawing the name of the lucky winner at 2 p.m.  For those interested in participating in the raffle, tickets are still available for purchase through the Foundation office.
