Local men arrested for assault in Shawnee

Shawnee police are investigating the assault of 36-year-old Jarric DeShawn Carolina and 36-year-old Monty Whittet, who were allegedly attacked by two local men in the parking lot outside of BrickHouse Saloon in Shawnee around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Choctaw and Harrah men were arrested for their alleged role in what could be a racially motivated assault and battery.

Both 28-year-old Brandon Killian, of Choctaw, and 24-year-old Devan Johnson, of Harrah, were arrested for the June 22 attack on two men outside of the downtown Shawnee bar.

Carolina was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital by ambulance, while Whittet refused medical treatment on the scene, the report shows.

Carolina remains hospitalized.

Witnesses told police the attack happened after an evening of drinking with friends.

The pair were arrested shortly after fleeing the scene, but which charges are to be filed will be determined after police can speak with all involved parties.

The incident was caught on video by a witness, and shows the attackers used racial slurs.

Police say they have not yet ruled out the incident as a hate crime.

“We are going to investigate all avenues to determine what caused it and why,” said Cpl. Vivian Lozano with the Shawnee Police Department.

According to the police report, after officers left Killian alone he began “to punch himself in the face multiple times in attempt to redden his face” for the photos taken of his injuries.

Johnson was released from the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center on bail, while Killian remains on a $25,000 bond.

I don’t care how drunk someone is, there is no excuse for this. People can suffer long term effects after being attacked.. Playground bullies, childhood fights and even fights when people get older are bad enough but to attack someone who probably didn’t expect it ESP, is not ok. When someone doesn’t know you intend to stomp them… (usually for no good reason) that’s considered an “attack” that’s what it is.
But that’s hilarious he was recorded hitting himself. Crystal Smith Rollins from Oklahoma City did that same thing way back when, I wish there would’ve been cameras to capture that.

But we should also remind ourselves that although Innocent until proven guilty isn’t a constitutional right, it is a universal human right as stated in that doctrine/declaration. There’s two sides to every story and sometimes neither will appear to be the truth. It’s a slippery slope.
    Heed this advice though please-
sometimes the best way to win a fight is to walk away. That’s tough when you’re young, I know.. But if you’ll make the effort to NOT hurt others in your life it’ll be worth a lot in the end. I promise.
No one’s perfect, everyone stumbles here and there. But hey-
Don’t beat yourself up over it.

    Intended. Nuff said.
