City Manager Tim Lyon signed the preliminary term sheet with SSM Health late last week. The long-term lease will be finalized in early 2021.  SSM Health will operate the hospital, medical group and ambulance service.

“SSM Health’s reputation for excellence in quality health care, innovation and financial stewardship is well known,” said Lyon. “We are extremely pleased about the new partnership and the positive impact SSM Health will have, not only in Midwest City, but all of eastern Oklahoma County.”

Joe Hodges, regional president of SSM Health Oklahoma, said they are pleased to expand services in eastern Oklahoma County.

“SSM Health Oklahoma has a long-standing tradition of serving the residents of Midwest City,” he said in a news release. “Eastern Oklahoma County has experienced tremendous growth, and we are pleased to expand our ministry’s presence to meet the needs of the residents beyond those already offered in the area by SSM Health Medical Group and at SSM Health St. Anthony Healthplex located at Douglas and I-40.”

Midwest City Memorial Hospital opened in 1962 as a 70-bed facility to serve the community. The city-owned hospital underwent several expansions over the next few decades. It was renamed Midwest City Regional Hospital in 1988.

In 1996, the city council agreed to lease the hospital to Health Management Associates, Inc. for $60 million. The city uses the interest from that agreement to award grants to local organizations.

In 2014, Community Health Systems bought Health Management Associates and assumed operations of the hospital. It was later renamed AllianceHealth Midwest.

“We look forward to a smooth transition over the coming months as the hospital moves into the next chapter of serving the community,” said Clay Franklin, CEO of AllianceHealth Midwest.

SSM Health is a Catholic, not-for-profit health system that provides health care services in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

SSM Health in Oklahoma includes SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital, Bone and Joint Hospital at St. Anthony, St. Anthony South, and St. Anthony Hospital in Shawnee. The network includes several other facilities including rural hospitals and SSM Health Medical Group with more than 250 physicians and providers.
