Carl Albert’s wrestlers nearly earned a second straight trip to the Class 5A dual state tournament.
The Titans beat Noble and Santa Fe South but lost to Lawton MacArthur 38-36 in the finals Jan. 17 at Carl Albert High School.
“It was a tough loss for our team and especially our seniors,” said coach Curt Hodges. “We really wanted to qualify for Dual State for a second year in a row, just came up two points short.”
Carl Albert took the lead late in the dual, but saw their hopes shattered after a controversial call. In the 190-pound match, Carl Albert’s Caden Longstreet trailed MacArthur’s Trae Kibble 11-3 in the third period. Longstreet received a flagrant misconduct penalty and was disqualified after headbutting Kibble. The Highlanders received six points to cut the Titans lead to 27-26.
Hodges disagreed with the call and said the team should have been assessed an unsportsmanlike penalty, but not a flagrant misconduct.
Cody Longstreet won the next match by a 4-0 decision at 215 pounds, and Alex Sutterfield received a forfeit at heavyweight, making it a 36-26 lead.
The Titans forfeited the final two weights – 106 and 113 – and MacArthur won the dual 38-36.
Carl Albert won four matches by fall. Brayden Mixay (120), Grant Gober (150), Nathan Sutterfield (157) and Isaiah Matanane (165) each pinned their opponent. Carter Henry also won by decision at 126.
“Bonus points are big to win duals like this,” Hodges said. “We knew it was going to be close with close calls just because of the nature of the dual. I’m really proud of the way we battled in each match, we gave it a great effort.”
Carl Albert beat Noble 45-21. Gober, Nathan Sutterfield, Mantanane, Raylyn Sherman, Caden Longstreet and Alex Sutterfield each won by fall. Kasen Miller earned a technical and Mixay had a major decision.
The Titans beat Santa Fe South 66-18. Mixay, Henry, Karsen Perry, Michael Lenz, Gober, Nathan Sutterfield, and Sherman earned falls for Carl Albert against Santa Fe South.
