The Midwest City boys have had their way with most of the teams in Class 5A this season.

On Friday night, El Reno gave them all they could handle.

The Bombers used a strong finish to top the Indians 76-66 in the 5A West Regional championship at JE Sutton Fieldhouse.

“We’re starting to put things together, but we need to do the little things,” said coach Torey Noel. “El Reno is a really good team and they’re really well coached and disciplined.”

Midwest City led much of the game but felt pressure late. El Reno’s Kaleb Blackwolf gave his team the lead twice in the fourth quarter. He was fouled on a basket and hit the free throw. And later hit a basket to give El Reno a 64-62 lead with just over five minutes to play.

The Bombers closed out the game on a 14-2 run for the win.

Deshawn Denson tied the game with a fastbreak basket, and Mason McKenzie gave them the lead with a score on the offensive glass.
Carl’Sheon Young delivered a jolt as he was fouled on a fastbreak dunk with 2:40 left. The junior hit the foul shot to make it a 69-64 score. He added two more scores off turnovers for the 76-66 win.

“I wanted to prove myself,” Young said. “That and one dunk was a gamechanger and gave us energy.”

Noel was pleased with the way Young responded after a rocky start.

“He struggled early, and I took him out and got onto him,” Noel said. “He was upset about little things. But when we called his number again, he took over the game.”

Denson and Roy Henderson led the Bombers with 18 points apiece, while Young had 16.

Blackwolf led all scores with 21 points including nine in the fourth quarter. Carter Roman Nose scored 14 points with 12 coming in the second half.
Midwest City led by one point at the end of the first quarter and went up 34-32 at halftime.

The Bombers took a 56-53 lead after three, before using a late rally for the win.

Midwest City will face Guthrie at 6 p.m. Friday in the Area finals at Edmond North. The loser will get Elgin/Del City on Saturday in the area consolation finals.
