Del City’s boys needed an extra day to get to the Area tournament.

After falling to Crossings Christian Friday in the regional finals, the Eagles returned the next day to punch their ticket with a 66-43 win against John Marshall in the consolation finals.

The Eagles got after John Marshall early as they led by double digits in the first quarter and took a 31-16 lead at halftime.

Del City continued to maintain control in the second half for the win in the elimination game.

Three players finished in double figures scoring. Michael Graham led the team with 17 points. Kentrell Thurston had 15 and Desean McCarroll added 14 in the win.

Size proved to be a major factor facing Del City in their pursuit of a birth to the area round of postseason play Friday night.

The most straight forward path was a win against Crossings Christian, who the Eagles faced in the Del City-hosted regional round.

The Knights spoiled that plan as they won 54-44, sending the Eagles to the consolation bracket.

The Eagles fell behind Crossings Christian in their Friday matchup quickly, before battling back after a slow start to take a lead into the second quarter. Another surge from Crossings Christian to open the second quarter was met with solid effort from Del City, led by Michael Graham’s 9 points in the first half, resulting in an Eagles 25-23 halftime lead.

From there, Crossings’ size proved to be too much. That came with both Crossings centers combining for 32 points, and proving to be a challenge for Del City to score against on the inside.

Del City coach Lenny Hatchett noted the impact size had on the outcome.

“I felt we left a lot of points off the board,” Hatchett said. “They’ve got two bigs that are active and really have to make you finish those shots and you’ve got to finish them strong. I don’t think we did that.”

The Eagles bounced back on Saturday night with a win over John Marshall.

They will face Elgin at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the area consolation semifinals. The elimination game will take place at Edmond North. The winner will then play Midwest City/Guthrie on Saturday in the area consolation finals.
