PIEDMONT – The Carl Albert girls basketball team hit a lull Saturday afternoon against Altus in the Class 5A area consolation finals.

Senior Ausha Moore made sure it was only a temporary lapse.

“We were kind of on the fence at halftime and I said we’re not losing this game,” Moore said. “We worked too hard to go out in area consolation.”

The message stuck as the Lady Titans stormed out of the gate in the second half. Jakary Brown hit a 3-pointer to start the third, and Moore later was fouled on an offensive putback and made the free throw.

Carl Albert never slowed down as they beat Altus 50-27 and advanced to the 5A state tournament for the fourth year in a row.

The Lady Titans (23-5) scored the first 11 points of the game. Altus (10-16) responded with a 12-2 run in the second quarter to tie the score at 13 all. Moore scored a basket and a free throw to give Carl Albert a 16-13 lead at halftime.

Carl Albert came out hot in the second half. They outscored Altus 19-6 in the third quarter. Audrey Plunkett and Brown both scored off steals to make it a 35-19 score heading into the fourth.

It was more of the same in the fourth as the Lady Titans wrapped up the 50-27 victory.

Plunkett led the team with 14 points and Moore and Brown each had 10 points.

The Lady Titans didn’t do much celebrating after the area consolation win.

“They have been to state before and I want them to celebrate some but love that they weren’t going crazy,” Richey said. “It’s hard getting to state. They said we’re going back but we’re not done yet.”

The Lady Titans lost to rival Midwest City Thursday night in the area championship game 50-40, snapping an eight-game winning streak. Moore led the team with 12 points and Essence Curry had 10 in the loss.

Carl Albert will face Sapulpa (21-6) in the first round of the 5A girls state tournament at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. The winner will meet Tulsa Booker T. Washington/Midwest City in the semifinals.
