Loud booms caused by emergency disposal of old military explosives

The Oklahoma City Police Department confirmed that loud explosions heard Wednesday night in the east metro were caused by disposal of antiquated and unstable military ordnances or explosives found at a residential property earlier in the evening.

The explosive devices were discovered by a resident while they were helping clear out a property near Britton Rd. and Midwest Blvd. The devices belonged to a former veteran who had passed away who had previously lived in the home.

Due to the potential risks to the public, the Oklahoma City Police Department Bomb Squad removed the devices from the property and immediately disposed of them at the police firing range near I-240 and Air Depot Blvd.

The Oklahoma City Police Department issued the following statement about the situation:

“On April 17th, the Oklahoma City Police Department Bomb Squad responded to a situation involving the disposal of antiquated and unstable military ordnances (explosives) found at a residential property.

This action was taken urgently in the interest of public safety, necessitating its removal from the premises. The disposal operation was conducted with precision and caution, culminating around 10 p.m. on April 17th.

While the detonation was necessary, we apologize for the disruption it caused to several residents across the metro area, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we prioritize community safety.”
