Big players make big plays.
That was the case Friday night in Carl Albert’s homecoming win over El Reno.
University of Oklahoma commits Trystan Haynes and Trynae Washington each scored three touchdowns in a 70-0 win at Gary Rose Stadium.
“That’s always fun to see, especially on homecoming,” said coach Mike Dunn. “A lot of people came out and the stands were full tonight. I’m proud of our kids for limiting distractions and keeping their focus.”
Haynes had four catches for 94 yards with a touchdown. He also ran for one score and added another on a punt return. Washington finished with four catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a third with a pick six.
The Titans improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in District 5A-2.
Senior quarterback Devin Woodring was 11 of 12 passing for 224 yards with four touchdowns. He also ran for 66 yards including a 50-yard burst.
Caden Davis scored both times he touched the ball in a wildcat formation. The senior showed his power with two touchdowns in short yardage.
“We got good blocks and a good push, and it always feels really good to score,” Davis said.
The night started with adversity. El Reno (2-3, 1-1) was stopped on their first possession of the game and had to punt from their own 17-yard-line. The punter got off a terrible punt and the ball landed behind the line of scrimmage. Because the ball did not pass the line of scrimmage, it was considered a live ball.
An El Reno player picked up the ball and flipped it to a teammate who returned it past midfield. Several Carl Albert players thought it was a dead ball. A penalty on Carl Albert moved the ball even further, giving El Reno a first-down at the Titan 34.
“We practice that every week. We know better. Our kids know better. It’s never happened to us in a game,” Dunn said. “They just caught us napping on the job there.”
The Titans defense cleaned up the mistake and stopped the Indians on fourth-and-goal from the eight.
Carl Albert quickly got to work on offense. Devin Woodring broke a 50-yard run down to the El Reno 1. On the next play, Davis scored from the wildcat formation.
Woodring later hit Washington for a 31-yard touchdown pass, and Davis scored again on short yardage for a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Washington and Haynes continued to find ways to score in the second. Haynes scored on a punt return, a run and a catch. Washington did his part with a 32-yard interception return and 19-yard touchdown grab with 3:39 remaining in the half.
LT Simmons also scored on a 21-yard screen pass from Woodring.
Carl Albert led 63-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Titans added one more score. Sophomore Anderson Collier scored on a two-yard run late in the third quarter.
The Titans defense stopped an El Reno drive late in the fourth quarter to preserve a fifth straight shutout to start the season.
Carl’Veon Young and Lebron Royal each had 11 tackles to lead the defense. Marcus James had eight tackles including a sack, and Nathan Pierucci had two tackles for loss.
“Last year, that team [El Reno] ran for 400 yards against us in the first round of the playoffs, they’re good, they’re physical and they’re very well coached,” Dunn said.
Carl Albert has a short week as they travel to Noble on Thursday night. The Bears (0-5, 0-2) are still looking for their first win of the season. They lost to Guthrie 41-14 last week.
“It’ll be contrasting styles compared to this week. El Reno likes to run 90% of the time, but Noble will throw it 90% and they’re not afraid to spread you out,” Dunn said. “And that’s good. We need to be tested in the back end.”
