The Carl Albert girls were winners at their home tournament.

For the first time under coach Kyle Richey, the Lady Titans won the annual Titan Classic. Carl Albert went 3-0 with wins over Collinsville, Sand Springs and Putnam City.

“It feels good to know that I was here to help with it,” said Carl Albert senior Audrey Plunkett, who was named the tournament’s MVP. “We’ve been working on our defense a lot in practice and knew we had to adjust to each team.”

The tournament featured a round robin format. Edmond Memorial was also undefeated but finished second based on the tiebreaker for total points allowed.

Carl Albert allowed 111 points, and Memorial gave up 126 points in wins over Del City, Collinsville and Sand Springs.

Richey said defense was the key to his team’s success.

“These three defensive performances are what we’re going to have to have to keep winning,” he said. “This is the first we’ve won it since I’ve been here.”

The Lady Titans improved to 16-1 overall and 7-0 in district play.

Jakary Brown and Hayden Harrell were all-tournament selections.

The Carl Albert girls opened the tournament with a 41-29 win over Collinsville on Thursday night. Harrell and Plunkett each scored 12 points to lead the team in scoring.

On Friday night, Carl Albert’s girls beat Sand Springs 71-43. Brown was the leading scorer with 19 points including four 3-pointers, and Plunkett added 13 in the win.

The Lady Titans closed out the tournament championship with a 60-39 win against Putnam City on Saturday evening. Brown led the team with 22 points and Plunkett scored 15.

Carl Albert got off to a hot start, outscoring the Pirates 20-4 in the first quarter. Putnam City returned the favor in the second as they outscored CAHS 16-4, cutting the deficit to 24-20 at halftime.

The Lady Titans rediscovered their offensive firepower in the second half. Brown hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 of her 22 points in the second half.

Carl Albert has a couple of tough district games this week with El Reno on Tuesday and Lawton MacArthur on Friday.

“This tournament was great, but our district games matter for the playoff pairings,” Richey said.
