The Del City girls continue to dominate District 5A-2.
The Lady Eagles completed a season sweep of rival Midwest City with a 79-29 victory Feb. 4 at JE Sutton Fieldhouse.
Saniya Bonds scored a game-high 16 points and Sacha Hunt scored 14 for the Lady Eagles. Kenadi Downer scored 10 points to lead Midwest City.
The Lady Eagles took control early as they opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Hunt and Bonds scored eight points apiece for a 20-7 lead. The visitors put up 24 points in the second quarter for a 44-14 halftime lead.
“That is what we wanted. Our game plan was to come out and jump on them early,” said Del City coach Mariah White. “We knew we had some advantages, and we took advantage of those. Our girls did a good job on defense, got steals, got rebounds, got up the floor. And we did it from the tip.”
Del City kept rolling in the second half for the big win.
“I told my team let’s go out there and just work and get it,” Bonds said. “Our I’m proud of my whole team.”
Both teams were winners on Friday night at home.
Midwest City bounced back with a 70-17 win against John Marshall. Jordan Hannah led the team with 13 points. Ceidi Johnson and Johnae Seay had 11 points apiece, and Kloey Knox kicked in 10 points.
Del City beat Western Heights in a 69-16 rout. Senior Shelby Thornton was the leading scorer with 12 points. Hunt finished with 11 points, Bonds had 10 points and Mackenzi Smithers, Paris Baker and Courtnie McCarroll had seven points each.
The Lady Eagles remain in first in District 5A-2 at 12-0, while the Lady Bombers move to 8-4 in district play.
The boys’ game was a different story, as the Bombers topped the Eagles 76-73 in double overtime.
Deshawn Denson scored a game-high 38 points. Jarvis Nash finished with 14 points and Mason McKenzie added nine in the win.
Kamonz Shaw scored 28 points to pace the Eagles.
Del City led by four points with 51 seconds left in regulation. Denson hit a pair of free throws, and Nash scored on a fastbreak after a steal by Demareo Jones, sending the game to overtime at 63-all.
Denson tied the game 69-69 on a layup in traffic with 50 seconds left. Del City’s last-second shot was off the mark, forcing double overtime.
The Bombers led for much of the second overtime. Del City’s Tayvann Johnson scored off an offensive rebound, cutting the deficit to 74-73. Nash added a pair of free throws, and Del City’s final shot was missed.
Midwest City improved to 8-3 in District 5A-2, while Del City stayed with Lawton for the district lead at 9-2.
Both Mid-Del schools are back in action Friday. Del City hosts Western Heights, and Midwest City will face John Marshall.
